Absolutely. I've seen many kids along there on day hikes. Make sure they can hike the 10k between campsites and be prepared to carry all their gear if you are going overnight. Doing a little bit from Botanical, Sombrio, or Mystic Beaches are great ways to start and see how it goes.

Nope, haven't had any bear spray with me on the JDF hikes. We've seen a few bears but there have been a good number of people around and then wandered off after us yelling.

Hey Lisa,The section between Bear and Chin is the most difficult along the trail but it's relative. It's got a good number of ravines to hike down then up again on the other side. None of it is technical it's just the up and down that tires your legs out! If you do find yourself in an emergency, you could probably find flat spots along the way to put down a tent for the night.

Hi there, a friend and I are looking to do the trail this summer and I am curious if there is camping anywhere between bear beach and chin beach. Everything we have read says that this is by far the most difficult portion of the trail. We plan to tackle it day two (spending our first night at bear). We are hoping to make it all the way to chin but if it is brutally difficult we are wondering if there is somewhere we can camp for the night and push through the rest the following day? Or is it not that bad?Any info is much appreciated. Thanks for your blog and all the great tips so far.Cheers
