There’s nothing quite like a good cup of coffee, fresh air and a good view at your favourite campsite.

While we love our ultralight cups and mugs when we’re backpacking, car and trailer camping is a chance to bring the kitchen sink and live a little.

For this test we ran 7 of our favourite travel mugs through a hot test, travelling in the car, short hiking trips and of course relaxing at the lake.

Travel mugs are great for relaxing at the campsite, taking to the office or keeping your brew hot on a road trip. They’re multi-purpose enough to use almost anywhere you go for hot or cold drinks.

With testing we wanted to see how all the mugs were to drink from, how hot they kept drinks over 12 or 24 hours, how they were to clean and if they fit in a cupholder.

Here’s what we tested:

Yeti Rambler 532 with HotShop Cap

Klean Kanteen TKWide Coffee Tumbler

Miir Tomo Insulated Bottle

Stanley Classic Travel Mug French Press

BrüMate Pour Over Mug

Snowpeak Kanpai Mug

Corkcicle Commuter Cup

Skip to the the Hot Test for all the mugs at the bottom of the article.

Yeti Rambler 532 with HotShot Cap

Yeti has made a name for it itself making bombproof (or bear-proof) coolers and their cups are similar.

The Rambler 532 is a 16 oz (532 ml) super durable, stainless steel, vacuum-insulated bottle. The leakproof HotShot Cap comes apart easy into only two parts so it’s easy to clean and keeps everything hot at the same time. One half-twist and it’s open for drinking anywhere around the rim. A full twist and the center comes out for cleaning.

We tested the 16 oz but there are 12 and 20 oz versions available. For lids there’s also a fast-flow water lid and a straw lid.

And yes it fits in a cupholder no problem.

Klean Kanteen TKWide Coffee Tumbler

Klean Kanteen have been making stainless drinking bottles and reusable food and drinkware since 2004 to they know a thing or two about it. My first stainless steel bottle I ever bought back in the day was a Klean Kanteen.

The TKWide Coffee Tumbler is a slender bottle with a nice lid for sipping. It’s made from 90% post-consumer recycled 18/8 stainless steel. It was one of the only mugs in the test that was over 120 degrees Fahrenheit after 12 hours. Still a nice temperature for coffee.

The wide mouth and simple lid make it easier to clean. Unscrew a small nut and the whole lid comes apart into 5 pieces for cleaning.

It’s cupholder compatible, leakproof and available in 12 and 16 oz with Twist, Straw, Water and Screw tops.

Miir Tomo Insulated Bottle

The Tomo from Miir is a bit different in this roundup. It’s not technically a mug but a thermos. It holds 33 oz (1 liter) itself and has a nice 360 lid to drink from any angle.

It comes with two 8 ounce cups (11 oz if you fill them to the brim) for sharing. Tomo means ‘friend’ in Japanese after all.

The larger size doesn’t fit in cupholders well but this is more likely to be chucked in the back of the car or backpack for the hike in. The handle keeps it from rolling around too much.

Be careful drinking from the Tomo after only a few hours. It kept liquid burning hot at 150 degrees Fahrenheit after 12 hours and still a drinkable 127 after 24 hours. If you need to keep things hot, the Tomo will be your friend.

It’s leakproof and fairly easy to clean. Miir recommends a small brush to clean inside the lid.

Stanley Classic Travel Mug French Press

Stanley was founded in 1913 by inventor William Stanley Jr. when he invested the stainless steel vacuum-insulated bottle. Since then the bottles have been found in working condition after falling off skyscrapers, after building have collapsed and bombs have exploded. The durability of the Classic Travel Mug French Press is no different.

The 16 oz cupholder-compatible mug has a quick-open lid that’s nice to drink from and stays attached with a solid hinge. The whole thing is leakproof and dishwasher-safe.

BrüMate Pour Over Mug

The BrüMate Pour Over Mug has a secret tucked right inside. A pour over tucks right inside the mug. Special filters from BrüMate are just the right size of the pour over. Both the mug and pour over are made of stainless steel. The pour over has some amazing siliconized or rubberized coating that has a really nice feel.

Hot Test

With all the mugs we ran a 12 hour hot test. Those that were over 120 degrees Fahrenheit by 12 hours kept going for another 12.

Each mug was filled with boiling water around 200F and closed. I checked the temperature every 1-2 hours with an Accuchef thermometer. Each cup/bottle was open for about 20 seconds when I was measuring the temperature. Temperature outside the bottles was warm room temperature.

Mugs on the left stayed hot longer.

What is the Yeti Rambler 532?

The Yeti Rambler Rambler 532 is an 18 oz (532 ml) vacuum-insulated bottle with a few options for lids. In this review with we tested the 360º HotShot™ Cap which is meant for sealing in hot beverages.

The mug is made from 18/8 stainless steel and has bare steel at the top and bottom. The bare steel at the top and bottom keeps the dings and scratches on the metal and prevents the edges of the paint from peeling. Yeti paint and build quality has been very high quality on cups and cooler’s I’ve had from them in the past.

The lid is the 360º HotShot™ Cap which is great for sipping hot things. It’s leakproof when it’s locked. With a half turn of the large tab in the middle of the lid, it’s open for sipping anywhere around the side. Slightly more of a turn and it locks open. Continue turning and the whole centre part of the lid comes up for easy cleaning or faster flow.

A Chug cap that is just a regular lid and a Straw cap with fold out straw are also available.

Size and Shape

The Rambler 532 is about 3″ wide and 9″ tall (7.6 x 22.6 cm), an average size for a travel mug. The lid is about 1.5 inches of that height.

It weighs about 1.1 pounds or .5 kg. The sides are vertical with a slightly textured finish. The bottom is bare steel as is the top around the mouth.

Pouring and Drinking

With a half turn of the inside of the lid, the Rambler is open for drinking. The HotShot lid is comfortable to drink from, doesn’t get in the way and prevents any splashing liquid if you’re on the move. The sides of the lid are nice and rounded.

I did find the flow out of the lid a little on the low side. If I wanted a big gulp from it, I had to wait a bit to get it all. Most of the time, especially with hot drinks, I only want a sip anyways so it works well. With one full turn, the inside of the lid pops out and provides plenty of flow, being wide open at that point.

Is It Leakproof?

Definitely. The HotShot Cap on the Rambler has not leaked at all if the lid is closed tight, in bags, cars or backpacks.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test.

Yeti doesn’t advertise how long the Rambler keeps things hot or cold. In my testing above, the Rambler got down to a still-drinkable 120 degrees shortly after 12 hours. If you haven’t drank you coffee after 12 hours, I’m not sure you will!

Cleaning

The HotShot lid is one of my favourite lids ever to drink from but it’s also the easiest to clean.

With a full turn, the centre part of the lid comes out and then it’s just a matter of washing the inside (a solid cap) and the outside (a tube with threads inside). All the parts are dishwasher safe.

Durability

I’ve encountered no issues with the Rambler yet after regular user at home, to the office and out on a few trips. If it’s anywhere as good as other Yeti products I own, it’s going to last a long time.

Who is Yeti?

Yeti was founded in 2006 with one mission: to make a cooler that could be use every single day. That meant 2 things, it would be such a good product, you’d want to use it every day. It also would be so durable, you could use it every single day without it breaking. Yeti coolers, tumblers and chairs are so bombproof that you can actually use them every single day for years and they just keep on going.

Conclusion

I can’t say enough good things about this simple vacuum-insulated bottle. The HotShot lid is nice to drink from, easy to use, easy to clean and leakproof, it’s hard to go wrong.

With a high quality build to the bottle and a simple cap, it’s had absolutely no issues in testing and I’m sure will last a long time. All this for a price that doesn’t break the bank either.

Verdict: Highly Recommended

Usual price: $30 USD ($40 CAD)

What is the Classic Travel Mug French Press?

The mug itself is painted 18/8 stainless steep and the lid and press are BPA-free plastic. The whole package can go in the dishwasher and has a lifetime warranty.

The french press is a plastic frame with mesh on the bottom and a seal on the outside. The mesh is quite fine for finer grounds of coffee.

The french press can be removed as well so if you’re making coffee another way, then just leave it at home and you have a regular travel mug.

Size and Shape

The mug weighs just over a pound and is about 9.6 inches tall. It’s a straight cylinder shape about 3 inches across so it fits in most cup holders.

The lid is held on with a hinge so you can’t lose it with a stainless steel cary handle on the outside. It’s great for tying a backpack or just for one-finger carrying.

The top and bottom are plain stainless steel. Any scratches and drops usually hit these corners so they shouldn’t scratch or peel the paint.

Pouring and Drinking

A small drinking hole in the top of the lid keeps the liquid flowing at a decent rate but doesn’t splash out or let much heat out. A small air hole in the middle is plugged by a silicone tip in the top of the lid.

Screwing the lid back on can take a couple tries. The hinge let’s the lid be at any angle which is required for getting it on and off but also let’s you line it up wrong. It’s usually pretty quick to screw on.

The edges of the mug itself under the lid are rather pointed. They’re not sharp but not as comfortable drinking straight from the mug.

Is it Leakproof?

The mug is definitely leakproof. Solid seals below and inside the lid keep things inside. Just make sure the lid is screwed on tight!

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test.

Miir Tomo

Snowpeak Kanpai (Hot lid)

Klean Kanteen TKWide Coffee

Yeti Rambler with Hotshot Cap

Snowpeak Kanpai (Sip lid)

Stanley Classic Travel Mug French Press

Brumate Pour Over Mug

Corkcicle Commuter Cup

7:45am

200

200

200

200

200

200

200

200

10am

189.1

185.4

177.6

179.1

167.2

161.8

160.0

149.2

12pm

179.2

173.8

162.1

164.8

148.3

144.0

138.9

127.6

1pm

175.5

168.8

157.6

158.4

142.3

136.2

132.6

122.2

3pm

167.2

158.4

146.5

148.1

130.6

125.2

120.0

111.0

5:30pm

159.1

148.1

136.6

136.9

120.9

114.6

110.1

102.9

7:45pm (12 hours)

152.1

139.6

129

128.8

113.7

107.4

103.8

97.5

7:45am (24 hours)

127.4

111.2

104.5

102.0

Hot test results

Stanley advertises 4 hours hot, 5 hours cold, and 20 hours iced for the Pour Over Mug. In my testing, we got down to a still-drinkable 120 degrees shortly after the 7 hours and 15 minute mark.

Cleaning

Cleaning is pretty easy with the french press and the mug, it’s all dishwasher safe. The mug is as well but there are a couple silicone seals in the mug that I take out and hand wash. I find the dishwasher gives the silicone a soapy taste over time. There isn’t anything else to take apart in the lid. The mesh bottom to the french press can unscrew from the rest of the press if you want to clean it that way but I usually leave it on.

Durability

The mug is extremely durable. Stanley builds things very tough. The paint is in good shape still. The bottom is bare stainless so if it gets dinged or scratched it won’t start to peel the paint. The lid is thick plastic and stainless steel so I don’t think there will be problems there. The hinge my break eventually but so far has felt very sturdy.

Who is Stanley?

Stanley was founded in 1913 by inventor William Stanley Jr. when he invented stainless steel vacuum insulation that is everywhere today.

Their Built For Life™ motto is still going strong and it can mean 2 things.

Stanley stuff is built strong. Their bottles have been found in decent condition after a building has collapsed, a bomb exploded or being dropped from a skyscraper.

Because they’re so tough, it takes a long time to end up in the landfill. When a bottle can last 50 years or more I don’t have to throw them in the garbage as often or buy more of them. Win win.

Conclusion

The Stanley Classic Travel Mug French Press needs a better name but nails the important things: holding coffee. Not only can it make coffee, it can make coffee all in one package. The build quality in the steel and plastic is top notch and I haven’t seen any durability issues with all my testing. The mug is easy to clean and you can’t lose the

If you like french press coffee, then this one is a great option for you.

Verdict: Highly recommended

Usual price: $36 USD ($40 CAD)

What is the Snowpeak Kanpai Mug?

The Kanpai is 3″ wide and 8.5″ tall, similar to many other tumblers and travel mugs. It weighs 12.5 oz (360 g) and holds 18.3 oz of liquid.

On the outside, the double-walled stainless steel is vacuum sealed for insulation. On top three different lids hold your drinks in. A sip lid has a small slider opening a hole to drink from. It’s easy and simple to slide to drink.

Two other lids keep your drink hot or cold for longer. The hot lid is just an insulated flat lid that keeps the heat in the longer. The cold lid has a tiny ice pack inside and can be frozen to create a tiny cooler. One pop or beer can fits inside but doesn’t quite take up the whole space so it can slide up and down still.

All the lids are BPA-free polypropylene.

Pouring and Drinking

The Kanpai is nice to drink from. The lid is lightweight but sturdy and it’s got a smooth edge to it. The top of the cup itself is less smooth but not so sharp it would cut anything. The Sip lid has a small cover that slides back and forth keeping your drink inside.

Is it Leakproof?

The Sip lid isn’t leakproof but would certain keep most of the liquid inside in case of a spill. The hot and cold lids are leakproof and can be thrown in a bag or the back of the car. There’s no latch or button to open them so it’s not likely they would come open themselves either.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test.

Miir Tomo

Snowpeak Kanpai (Hot lid)

Klean Kanteen TKWide Coffee

Yeti Rambler with Hotshot Cap

Snowpeak Kanpai (Sip lid)

Stanley Classic Travel Mug French Press

Brumate Pour Over Mug

Corkcicle Commuter Cup

7:45am

200

200

200

200

200

200

200

200

10am

189.1

185.4

177.6

179.1

167.2

161.8

160.0

149.2

12pm

179.2

173.8

162.1

164.8

148.3

144.0

138.9

127.6

1pm

175.5

168.8

157.6

158.4

142.3

136.2

132.6

122.2

3pm

167.2

158.4

146.5

148.1

130.6

125.2

120.0

111.0

5:30pm

159.1

148.1

136.6

136.9

120.9

114.6

110.1

102.9

7:45pm (12 hours)

152.1

139.6

129

128.8

113.7

107.4

103.8

97.5

7:45am (24 hours)

127.4

111.2

104.5

102.0

Hot test results

Snowpeak says the insulation time is 6 hours. Even with just the Sip lid, the Kanpai was still a drinkable 120 degrees (F) after 9 hours and 45 minutes. Plenty of time to have a hot drink with you all day.

Cleaning

The Kanpai is relatively easy to clean. Snowpeak recommends hand washing so that’s a bit of extra work but as far as handwashing goes, it’s quick. The bottle doesn’t have any nooks and crannies and has a large mouth to see what’s growing in there and get a brush in.

The Hot and Cold lids don’t have any openings so they just need a wash on the outside. The Sip lid takes a little more effort to clean but is easy to do. The small cover slides back and forth and pops off easily by pinching the tabs under the lid. Just don’t lose the cover!

Sip lid with the sliding cover off

Durability

The cup on on the Kanpai is strong stainless and I know Snowpeaks manufacturing is very high quality. Nothing can break on the Hot and Cold lids so they should be fine for a long time. I worry an little about the sliding tab on the Sip lid and what happens if that gets dropped. It’s fairly thin plastic. So far I’ve had no issues with it over a few trips and many days taking around town and to the office.

Who is Snowpeak?

Based in Japan, Snowpeak has been making ultra-high quality camping and outdoor gear since 1958. Their products mimic home products but are smaller, lighter and easier to pack in the car.

They make tents, packs, clothing, and cooking utensils. Their metal products are super high quality, especially anything titanium. I’ve used titanium Snowpeak pots and utensils for years. They aren’t cheap but are the best you can get.

Conclusion

The Kanpai from Snowpeak is a beautiful mug with multiple lid options. It did well in our hot test with just the Sip lid and probably lasts even longer with the Hot lid on. Cleaning is fairly easy, although they do recommend hand washing. The price is steep for a travel mug but if you can find a sale, it’s going to last you a long time.

Verdict: Recommend

Usual price: $97.95 USD ($115 CAD)

As part of our favourite camp mug testing, we put the BrüMate Pour Over through it’s paces to see how it was drinking, cleaning and traveling with. Here’s the results.

What is the BrüMate Pour Over Mug?

The Brumate Pour Over Mug is a travel/camp mug that includes a custom pour over. The pour over is covered with a silicone type material that is amazing to touch and nests inside the cup for easy travel.

The cup itself is 20 oz total. BrüMate says there’s 16 oz for coffee and 4 for cream. The base is narrower and fits in cupholders but the top flares out a bit. On the bottom is a silicone base that prevents it from sliding around.

On top is a unique lockable lid which BrüMate calls the ‘Muv’. It’s made from Tritan Renew plastic. Tritan is BPA-free plastic made by Eastman with 50% recycled plastic.

I love seeing more recycled content in new products, especially something like clear plastic. In the past clear hard plastic couldn’t be made from recycled material easily.

A small latch snaps down over the drinking hole. It can be left in place or locked there by pushing the little tab up. When it’s up in the drinking position a small magnet keeps it from smacking you in the face.

Just above the latch a small handle sticks out for easy carrying. I don’t think I’d want it swinging around on the outside of my backpack but you could if you need to. The inside of the handle is covered with a thin rubber or silicone which makes it just a little more comfortable.

One downside to the Tritan material is that they don’t recommend using it with MCT or coconut oil. I’m not sure if this is a known issue or just a precaution but if you’re a bulletproof coffee fan, then this cup isn’t for you.

Pour Over

A sleek, small pour over nests right inside the mug. It’s bottom ring matches the top of the mug exactly for making coffee or hanging inside.

I’m not sure what coating on the pour over but it feels amazing to touch. It’s a very smooth, silicone type of material that just feels good in the hand.

10 filters are included with the cup and you can buy plenty more on the site. A back of 40 is $10 USD which makes them a bit more than regular filters. They’re a custom size to fit inside the small pour over. They’re biodegradable so cleanup is so easy.

Pouring and Drinking

Drinking from the mug is nice, both from the lid and from the mug itself. The rounded edges on both are smooth and comfortable. I do find the raised part of the lid a little high and touches my mustache while drinking but that probably won’t bother most people. Many cups with some sort of latch or closure on the lid do this.

Is it Leakproof?

Through falling over, rolling around in the car and getting stuffed in my backpack the mug and lid are definitely leakproof. The lockable latch and good seals around the lid keeps things closed tight.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test.

BrüMate advertises 6 hours hot and 24 hours cold for the Pour Over Mug. In my testing, we got down to a still-drinkable 120 degrees after 7 hours and 15 minutes. You’ll probably want a different cup of coffee by 3pm!

Cleaning

Cleaning the mug and pour over is easy, just chuck them all in the dishwasher. Leave the latch on the lid undone and it’s good to go. It’s nice to not have to worry about washing it by hand.

Not all of the colors are dishwasher safe so double-check if you’re picking one up.

Durability

After regular use for the last few weeks, there isn’t a scratch on the pour, lid or mug. Dishwashers can be hard on the finishes and plastic in the lids of the mugs sometimes but software I can’t see a single issues. The silicone bottom will keep the bottom edges off the ground and should save the paint there most of the time.

Who is BrüMate?

Dylan Jacob started BrüMate after seeing a big hole in the drinkware industry. Many things could be done different or just better. He set out on a mission to create a very customer-focused, innovation-driven brand that gives back as much as it helps customers.

They create coolers, mugs, tumblers, and cups that aim to be multi-purpose and a bit different than the rest.

BrüMate has worked with many different causes and is member of the Conservation Alliance to help fund and advocate for protection of North America’s wild and scenic natural beauty.

Conclusion

The BrüMate Pour Over mug is ready to go travel and adventure wherever you go. With a filter, coffee and hot water you’ve got coffee anywhere. The filters are a custom size which might limit your coffee making abilities on the road so pack extras. In our test it stayed hot for over 7 hours so you might not need to make more on the road

The lid is made from Tritan Renew, a clear 50% recycled plastic and the pour over a wonderful siliconized material that’s just nice to tough.

After that hot 7 hours, a quick rinse or dishwasher you’re ready to go again.

Usual price: $44.99 USD ($59.29 CAD)

What is the Corkcicle Commuter Cup?

The Commuter Cup is beautiful travel mug from Corkcicle. We reviewed the 17oz in the Quicksand color but there is a 9 oz and many other finishes to pick from. There are a ton of finishes to choose from. Dragonfly and Dipped Olive are also stunning.

On top, a 360 Sip Lid pushes in quickly to open it for sipping. One quick push closes the lid again for travel. Very easy and fast to open and close.

The bottle itself is stainless steel but there’s a ceramic coating inside that so what you’re drinking doesn’t touch the stainless. I’m not able to taste the difference between ceramic and stainless but it’s nice for those who can.

On the bottom is a non-slip circle that is very grippy. When it’s wet it has a little suction to the bottom of the sink or other smooth surfaces but it’s nice and grippy like it should be on dry surfaces. It’s not going to go sliding anywhere.

The slender bottom easily fits in any regular cupholder and feels very nice to hold. The flat sides and slight taper just feels good to hold.

Size and Shape

The Commuter is 8.3 inches tall and 3.13 inches around. There’s a slight taper so the bottom is less than that, easily fitting into cupholders. No issues with putting into bike bottle cages either.

A thin rubber grip on the bottom makes it very non-slip. When it’s sitting on a table, you can’t see the rubber bottom to it. It disappears in the shadow below the cup.

Pouring and Drinking

The 360 Sip Lid is very nice to drink from. Coffee and water come out at a decent speed and not too fast. Opening and closing the lid is just a quick tap in the middle of the top. The whole center sinks in allowing liquids to come out.

The edges around the top of the lid are smooth and sloped towards the middle. It doesn’t have any sharp edges on top.

The top of the cup itself is smooth as well if you aren’t drinking with the lid. The top edge of the cup is uncovered stainless so if you’re drinking straight from the cup, the liquid will touch stainless.

Is it Spillproof?

For quick tips, the Commuter holds all your coffee no problem. The lid does let a little bit of the liquid through a few drips at a time though so it’s not safe for just throwing in a bag. With how easy the lid is to open and sip it may bump something and open anyways. Great for travel and drinking, not enough for storing in a bag though.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test.

Miir Tomo

Snowpeak Kanpai (Hot lid)

Klean Kanteen TKWide Coffee

Yeti Rambler with Hotshot Cap

Snowpeak Kanpai (Sip lid)

Stanley Classic Travel Mug French Press

Brumate Pour Over Mug

Corkcicle Commuter Cup

7:45am

200

200

200

200

200

200

200

200

10am

189.1

185.4

177.6

179.1

167.2

161.8

160.0

149.2

12pm

179.2

173.8

162.1

164.8

148.3

144.0

138.9

127.6

1pm

175.5

168.8

157.6

158.4

142.3

136.2

132.6

122.2

3pm

167.2

158.4

146.5

148.1

130.6

125.2

120.0

111.0

5:30pm

159.1

148.1

136.6

136.9

120.9

114.6

110.1

102.9

7:45pm (12 hours)

152.1

139.6

129

128.8

113.7

107.4

103.8

97.5

7:45am (24 hours)

127.4

111.2

104.5

102.0

Hot test results

The Commuter kept coffee warm for about 5 hours, which is exactly what they have posted on their website. Past that it dipped below the 120 lower end for coffee. 5 hours is plenty for a morning coffee getting to lunch but it won’t keep things hot all day.

Cleaning

Cleaning on the Commuter is a bit of work. It’s hand wash only for the cup.

The lid doesn’t come apart at all so it’s hard to see if it’s dirty inside. It’ll need a soak in something to really get it clean inside.

Durability

Ceramic is a pretty durable material so I don’t really have any concerns with how long the cup will last. The combination of stainless and ceramic should make it pretty tough.

The paint is spotless so far. It’s been in and out of the car and fallen over on the counter a couple times.

My only concern for the longevity of the Commuter is the lid. It has some mechanism inside that pops it up and down and can’t be opened. At some point It’ll get too hard to clean and have to be chucked. I’d love to see a more cleanable lid from Corkcicle.

Who is Corkcicle?

Corkcicle began in 2010 when they created the first wine-chilling cork, aka the ‘corkcicle’.

Since then they’ve branched into all kinds of sustainable drinkware, barware, coolers and bags. They aim to make sustainable stylish. I have to admit their tumblers and bottles look amazing compared to the utilitarian stainless bucket look of some other brands.

They’ve done a ton of collabs with the likes of Marvel, Disney, Rifle Paper Co and others. They also donate 1% of every purchase to charity:water. Always nice to see another big brand working so hard on water and sustainability projects.

Conclusion

The Corkcicle Commuter Cup is a beautiful travel mug that feels good to hold and drink from. The finishes are nicer than most other mugs I’ve had and it’s been very durable so far. The ceramic coating is perfect for those that don’t like a stainless steel taste to their coffee. I’d love to see a lid that’s easier to clean but outside of that, it’s a joy use.

Verdict: Recommended

Usual Price: $47.95 USD ($72.00 CAD)

What is the TKWide Coffee Tumbler?

The TKWide Coffe Tumbler is a vacuum insulated travel mug with a twist-off cap. A rotating lid inside the cap lets you close it up tight or sip from it with a little twist. A small handle tucks away nicely on the back of the cap and doesn’t fall into your face when you drink from it. The handle is small but enough to grab with a few fingers when you’ve got lots of stuff in your arms.

Size and Shape

The slender body is a bit taller than other cups and fits easily in cup holders. I prefer the size of it compared to chunky tumblers.

The powder coating doesn’t go right to the bottom so it’s more durable to drops and dings. The bottoms of painted cups tend to scratch first.

Pouring and Drinking

The TKWide feels great pouring and drinking. It’s doesn’t drip down the side and the mouth piece is smooth and comfortable. The twist part of the cap opens easy but not accidentally on it’s own. There’s nothing big and intrusive on your face when you drink from it. It’s easily been one my favourite coffee cup lids that I’ve used.

Even without a lid, the top is nice and rounded for sipping if your drink is too hot or you just need to hydrate post-haste. Instead of solid threads for screwing the lid on, there are just rounded bumps inside the top.

Is it Leakproof?

Yes, definitely spill proof.

After many tests with with hot coffee and cold water inside, it’s still spillproof. I think there could be a chance the cap gets turned open in a bag but there’s no issues if the top isn’t going to get bumped.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test. Those that were over 120 degrees Fahrenheit by 12 hours kept going for another 12. The TKWide did very well.

Each mug was filled with boiling water around 200F and closed. I checked the temperature every 1-2 hours with an Accuchef thermometer. Each cup/bottle was open for about 20 seconds when I was measuring the temperature. Temperature outside the bottles was warm room temperature.

The TKWide easily lasted 12 hours with hot coffee. And stayed a respectable 104.5 degrees after 24 hours. 120 degrees is still good coffee temperature. Anything less than that is getting luke warm. I’m not saying I’ve never drank coffee that temperature but that’s what all cups of coffee should aspire to be.

Cleaning

Cleaning is the ultimate test for the coffee cups and tumblers. If they’re easy to clean, they might earn a spot in my cupboard for 5 years or more. Hard to clean and I always wonder what’s growing inside the lid. Those ones get chucked pretty quick. Easier to clean products are more sustainable products.

The TKWide is very simple and easy to clean. The lid is made up of 5 parts and fits together with 1 screw down from the main cap. To clean, it’s just a matter of removing the ‘nut’ on the bottom of the screw and pull 3 pieces off the bottom. The top of the cap then pulls out the top.

The whole thing is dishwasher safe but I keep any rubber or silicone bits out since they start to test like soap after a while. The rest just goes in the dishwasher. It’s easy to see that everything is perfectly clean. No science experience can hide in any of the parts.

Durability

All the Klean Kanteens I’ve had over the years are still going strong. The BPA-free plastic and stainless will last forever. As with most stainless mugs and tumblers, the paint is the first thing to go. Currently the TKWide doesn’t have a scratch yet. Through a few weeks so far of the using it daily for coffee, rolling around in the car, and going in the dishwasher, it’s still spotless.

Klean Kanteen use their Klean Coat® finish and so far it’s been super durable. Ideally I could tell you what it looks like in 5 or 10 years but we’re not there yet. I’ll make some updates in 6 months and a year to see who’s paint is still standing.

Who is Klean Kanteen?

Klean Kanteen was founded in 2004 with the goal of creating re-usable drink bottles and food containers that would last forever. They’re family and employee owned, a Certified B Corporation, Climate Neutral Certified and a member of 1% for the planet. They focus on adventure and conserving wild places. My kind of company.

Conclusion

With an easy-to-clean and spillproof lid, great heat retention, ultra-durable paint the TKWide will be in my daily rotation for a long time to come. It easily made 12 hours with hot coffee and

Verdict: Highly Recommended

What is the Tomo?

The Tomo is a vacuum bottle (or flask or thermos depending on what you call them) with 2 cups and a 360 pour lid. Each of the lids make 8 ounce cups and the main container holds 1 liter or 33 oz. The 2 lids are interchangeable but the bottom one has some branding and a QR code on it so you’ll probably want to keep it on the bottom.

Tomo means ‘friend’ in Japanese and it will certainly be your friend on cold days at the cabin or out camping. It’s BPA free and has a lifetime warranty.

Size and shape

So that’s MiiR. Back to the Tomo.

It’s a 1 litre or 33 oz vacuum bottle with a cup on the top and bottom. Each cup holds 8 oz nicely, 11oz if you fill them right to the brim.

The bottom of the whole Tomo bottle with cup on it is 3.25 inches wide but just 3 inches without.

A slim handle keeps it from rolling and makes it easier to carry with your hands full. The handle is 6 inches long and sticks out 1.125 inches from the bottle.

Pouring and drinking

Pouring and drinking with the Tomo is nice and easy. The 360 pour lid just needs a little push to open and then push again to close. It pours nicely and doesn’t run down the side of the bottle. The large mouth easily fits ice cubes for the hot days too.

The 360 lid easily keeps all the liquid in. I have yet to have a leak out of the lid itself. Even if it did, the cup screwed onto the top would prevent any big spills. I have no issue throwing the Tomo into a bag or into the back of the car.

The. side of the pour lid is soft and smooth and feels good to drink straight from it. The edges of both cups are nice and smooth as well. The threads are smooth and rounded.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test. Those that were over 120 degrees farenheit by 12 hours kept going for another 12. The Tomo passed with flying colors.

Each mug was filled with boiling water around 200F and closed. I checked the temperature every 1-2 hours with an Accuchef thermometer. Each cup/bottle was open for about 20 seconds when I was measuring the temperature. Temperature outside the bottles was warm room temperature.

The Tomo did extremely well. It’s larger than the other mugs in the test but all are vacuum insulated. By noon it was still too hot to drink. At 12 hours it was still over 150F or hot coffee temperature. I didn’t measure at all overnight but at 24 hours the wnext morning it was still 127F or decent warm coffee.

Cleaning

Reusable bottles and mugs are great but some are too complicated and break or are hard to clean.

The MiiR bottle itself is easy to clean. It’s got a wide mouth and no hidden edges. The cups are easy to clean too only being a couple inches deep. MiiR recommends hand washing the bottle and cups. As with every cup I’ve tested in the past, the paint starts to wear off in the dishwasher.

The 360 pour lid is harder to clean. It’s top rack dishwasher safe and isn’t too hard to clean with a brush but it’s hard to see into if it’s really clean. I’ve opened up some lids from other cups in the past and they’ve been black with who knows what growing inside. I’d love to see MiiR make a lid that’s easier to take apart. We’d be able to use it longer if we knew the lid was clean and not growing a science experiment.

Durability

So far the Tomo has looked very durable. The lid, cups and bottle itself look and feel bombproof.

Paint on powder-coated drinkware always wears off eventually so it’s just a matter of time. It’s fallen on some rocks already and has a small chip in the paint but other than that is in very good shape. If you’re less clumsy than I am, then the paint will last a long time. Cleaning it by hand will make it last longer.

Who is MiiR?

Since 2009 MiiR, based in Seattle, Washington, has been trying to do good things for the world. After the owner, Bryan Papé, nearly died in a skiing accident, he re-arranged his life to have more of an impact. MiiR was born.

They make re-usable bottles, cups and flasks and donate whenever they can. MiiR is a certified B Corporation, member of 1% for the planet, Certified Evergreen, and a Climate Neutral-certified brand. As of 2022 they’ve donated over $3.8 million across 26 countries.

Conclusion

The MiiR Tomo is the perfect vacuum bottle for keeping drinks hot and cold on adventures. With over 24 hours of hot drinks, it’s very well insulated. Cleaning the bottle and cups is easy but I’d prefer a lid I could take apart. While not ideal, it’s not the complicated science experiments other lids are so minor issue.

I’ve been very happy with the Tomo for coffee, hot chocolate and cold water.

Verdict: Highly Recommended

Usual Price: $59.95 USD ($87.99 CAD)
