BrüMate Pour Over Mug Review

Most camp and travel mugs need a way to make coffee; they’re only the vessels. BrüMate wanted to make a complete travel package for making coffee. The Pour Over Mug includes a pour over that nests right inside the mug. Flip it over and you’re ready to make the magic.

As part of our favourite camp mug testing, we put the BrüMate Pour Over through it’s paces to see how it was drinking, cleaning and traveling with. Here’s the results.

What is the BrüMate Pour Over Mug?

The Brumate Pour Over Mug is a travel/camp mug that includes a custom pour over. The pour over is covered with a silicone type material that is amazing to touch and nests inside the cup for easy travel.

The cup itself is 20 oz total. BrüMate says there’s 16 oz for coffee and 4 for cream. The base is narrower and fits in cupholders but the top flares out a bit. On the bottom is a silicone base that prevents it from sliding around.

On top is a unique lockable lid which BrüMate calls the ‘Muv’. It’s made from Tritan Renew plastic. Tritan is BPA-free plastic made by Eastman with 50% recycled plastic.

I love seeing more recycled content in new products, especially something like clear plastic. In the past clear hard plastic couldn’t be made from recycled material easily.

A small latch snaps down over the drinking hole. It can be left in place or locked there by pushing the little tab up. When it’s up in the drinking position a small magnet keeps it from smacking you in the face.

Just above the latch a small handle sticks out for easy carrying. I don’t think I’d want it swinging around on the outside of my backpack but you could if you need to. The inside of the handle is covered with a thin rubber or silicone which makes it just a little more comfortable.

One downside to the Tritan material is that they don’t recommend using it with MCT or coconut oil. I’m not sure if this is a known issue or just a precaution but if you’re a bulletproof coffee fan, then this cup isn’t for you.

Pour Over

A sleek, small pour over nests right inside the mug. It’s bottom ring matches the top of the mug exactly for making coffee or hanging inside.

I’m not sure what coating on the pour over but it feels amazing to touch. It’s a very smooth, silicone type of material that just feels good in the hand.

10 filters are included with the cup and you can buy plenty more on the site. A back of 40 is $10 USD which makes them a bit more than regular filters. They’re a custom size to fit inside the small pour over. They’re biodegradable so cleanup is so easy.

Pouring and Drinking

Drinking from the mug is nice, both from the lid and from the mug itself. The rounded edges on both are smooth and comfortable. I do find the raised part of the lid a little high and touches my mustache while drinking but that probably won’t bother most people. Many cups with some sort of latch or closure on the lid do this.

Is it Leakproof?

Through falling over, rolling around in the car and getting stuffed in my backpack the mug and lid are definitely leakproof. The lockable latch and good seals around the lid keeps things closed tight.

Hot test

With all the mugs in our recent camp mug roundup, we ran a 12 hour hot test. Those that were over 120 degrees Fahrenheit by 12 hours kept going for another 12.

Each mug was filled with boiling water around 200F and closed. I checked the temperature every 1-2 hours with an Accuchef thermometer. Each cup/bottle was open for about 20 seconds when I was measuring the temperature. Temperature outside the bottles was warm room temperature.

Hot test results

BrüMate advertises 6 hours hot and 24 hours cold for the Pour Over Mug. In my testing, we got down to a still-drinkable 120 degrees after 7 hours and 15 minutes. You’ll probably want a different cup of coffee by 3pm!

Cleaning

Cleaning the mug and pour over is easy, just chuck them all in the dishwasher. Leave the latch on the lid undone and it’s good to go. It’s nice to not have to worry about washing it by hand.

Not all of the colors are dishwasher safe so double-check if you’re picking one up.

Durability

After regular use for the last few weeks, there isn’t a scratch on the pour, lid or mug. Dishwashers can be hard on the finishes and plastic in the lids of the mugs sometimes but software I can’t see a single issues. The silicone bottom will keep the bottom edges off the ground and should save the paint there most of the time.

Who is BrüMate?

Dylan Jacob started BrüMate after seeing a big hole in the drinkware industry. Many things could be done different or just better. He set out on a mission to create a very customer-focused, innovation-driven brand that gives back as much as it helps customers.

They create coolers, mugs, tumblers, and cups that aim to be multi-purpose and a bit different than the rest.

BrüMate has worked with many different causes and is member of the Conservation Alliance to help fund and advocate for protection of North America’s wild and scenic natural beauty.

Conclusion

The BrüMate Pour Over mug is ready to go travel and adventure wherever you go. With a filter, coffee and hot water you’ve got coffee anywhere. The filters are a custom size which might limit your coffee making abilities on the road so pack extras. In our test it stayed hot for over 7 hours so you might not need to make more on the road

The lid is made from Tritan Renew, a clear 50% recycled plastic and the pour over a wonderful siliconized material that’s just nice to tough.

After that hot 7 hours, a quick rinse or dishwasher you’re ready to go again.

Usual price: $44.99 USD ($59.29 CAD)
